Salt has been cut from the mountain above Hallstatt for roughly 7,000 years, which makes the Salzbergwerk the oldest known salt mine on earth. Above the village, a funicular lifts visitors to the mine terrace and the Welterbeblick, a steel platform cantilevered some 350 metres over the water. From there the pattern becomes legible: brine pipelines, wooden staircases dated to the Bronze Age, and the pale scar of the Salzberg valley. UNESCO inscribed the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape in 1997 for precisely this fusion of industry and terrain. The designation covers far more than the photographed shoreline: Gosau, Bad Ischl, the Traun river, and Gmunden with its lake castle Schloss Ort all fall inside it.
